First Short Film (but just 100 seconds)
Sunday, August 17, 2008
Consider reading an old blog entry I wrote last year:
LINKSo anyway, I decided to leave Tokyo upon completing my masters and am now back here in QC. This semester, I enrolled in just two classes at the UP Film Institute. Although I still find it a bit strange to be the oldest in the entire class (after the instructors, who are also just 2-5 years older than me), I do find it challenging to come up with ideas for little film exercises such as this.
I used
Power Director, the video editing software that was given for free when I purchased my
Victor GZ-HD3 HD camera in Tokyo in March of this year. I wanted to learn how to edit with the more popular Adobe Premiere but I still cannot figure out how to open
.tod files taken by my camera in Premiere (leave comments if you know how to). All sounds come from the
freesound project (really a revolutionary endeavor!) and licensed under
creative commons.
So, here it is. I am embarrassed to show my works, but anyway, here is my first assignment for our documentary class. Our instructor wanted us to make a short film with the theme "
100 seconds about myself." Here's a part of me documented in film.

Framing Souvenir Photos
Tuesday, August 05, 2008
Sample of a typical conversation with HBB when we're on our touristy mode:
HBB: Look! Look how pretty the building is!!!
Choooouuuu kireiii!!! (japanese for "It's really beautiful!")
The Washington State Capitol.
Dada: Yeah.
HBB:
Matte, Matte! (Wait, wait!) Stay here and take a photo of me.
(HBB runs toward the building and strikes a pose.)
Dada: But it's too cold here.
HBB: It won't take long. Just take a photo which is not so close and which includes all the building, pleeeaaaaaase.
Click.

Dada: (Shows pic to HBB). Would this be ok?
HBB: Uhhh, one more please.
(HBB goes back to the pose in front of the building. He notices that Dada is zooming in her lenses again, like she always does).
HBB: (pissed) No! Not too close!
(Dada ignores HBB.)

HBB: Show me. (Dada extends the camera for HBB to see). Ugh! I don't know how to smile. Okay, one more.
Click.

HBB: What's this?! Come on, take a decent one.
Dada: Okay, one last. Just stay as you are. But it's cooooolllldddd... Brrrr....
HBB. Yeah, samui (cold) Wait... Haaaachoooo!
Click.

(HBB recovers and tries to pose again.)
CLICK.

HBB checks Dada's camera to check how she framed of his picture. Infuriated, he screams:
HBB: No, not like this! Too close!
Dada: I'll try again. Go there.
HBB: No!!! Go there and I'll show you how I want my photo taken.
Dada: I don't want. It's too freaking cold here.
HBB: Just go there and smile, ok?!
(Dada tries one good pose.)
CLICK!

HBB: (Shows photo to Dada) Like this, ok?
Dada: Ok...It's cooooollldddd, I don't want to take photos anymore... I'm gonna dieeee...
HBB: Just one more...
(HBB notices that Dada is zooming in again)
HBB: No!!! I know you're still too close!
Dada: But it's better like this otherwise it will just be buildings in the picture!
HBB: But I want a photo of me
WITH the building!
Dada: Why?! What for?!
HBB: I seldom ask you to take a photo of me so just do as I want!
Dada: I think it's better when zoomed in.
HBB: Uggggh!!!! @'&M`*"<@!!!! Forget it!!! I just want one souvenir with the Capitol! Dada: Ok, one more...Go there now
hayaku (fast). So cooolllddd, brrrrr.....
HBB: No! Forget it! Take away the camera!!! Let's go!
(And they don't talk for about 30 mins while strolling the wintry roads of Washington...)
